Mahashivratri is celebrated in the honor of Hindu god Lord Shiva. The Hindu festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Magh month, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Maha Shivratri literally means 'the night (ratri) of the Supreme Lord principle (Shiva)'. It is said that at this night Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction.
Who is LORD SHIVA?
Lord Shiva is called the soul of all creation. Shiva is that from where everything has come, everything is sustained in it and everything dissolves into it – that is Shiva or the Shiva Tattva. The Lord embodies the truth, harmony, beauty and infinity, the essence of our soul. Hence, it is said that when we worship Lord Shiva, we recognize dwell in these higher qualities within ourselves – a connection with oneself.
Lord Shiva is said to be half man and half woman. In the full figure of Shiva, the principles of male and female are united. His figure is split half way down the body, one half representing his body and the other half that of Parvati's.
It is Shiva's relationship with his wife, Parvati(daughter of Himavaan - Haimavati) which brings him balance. There is no Shiva without Shakti and no Shakti without Shiva, the two are one - or the absolute state of being.
As per the Vedas, the Universal Spiritual energy generated by favourable planetary positions at its peak during this time. Thus Mahashivratri Puja benefits and has a profound impact on the Supreme Lord's devotees.
Lord Shiva was known to be a regular consumer of Marijuana. And so, you can see that, many Shiv devotees consume marijuana on this day. Also, drinking "Thandai" which is a special type of milk, is also very common on Shiv Ratri.

Om Namah Shivaya
"Om Namah Shivaya"
ओम नमः शिवाय
Om - Before universe, there was a vibrationless void of pure existence. Out of this void came the vibration which started the universe, which is known as Om. Namah - This literally translate to bow. Shivaya - This, of course, Shiva; but more than that, it means the inner self.
When understood fully (and according to Shaivism), it means “I bow to the inner Self”.
