Coronavirus Causes and Symptoms

What is a coronavirus?

The coronavirus is a broad family of viruses that can cause a range of life-threatening illnesses such as common cold and many serious types like SARS and MERS. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous.

They get their name from Latin word Corona and also their  microscopic appearance looks like a crown shape with protrusions around it. Some coronaviruses only affect animals, but others can also affect humans as well.

There's a fairly wide spectrum, in terms of clinical illness. It does sound like a lot of the cases can be mild. There are definitely some more severe cases and those can be pneumonia or they can lead to respiratory failure and there have been a few deaths, but the symptoms are really nonspecific.

So they are a lot like what we would see with influenza virus. So those are things like fever, dry cough, sore throat, muscle aches, headaches... those kind of things. So unfortunately there's no specific symptom associated with this particular virus.

SARS they also came out of China back in 2003 more recently. MERS which is known as the Mid East respiratory syndrome virus which is coming out of the Arabian Peninsula so now this is the third kind of novel coronavirus that we're having experience with. Usually cause mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illnesses like the common cold.

Coronavirus symptoms may include one runny nose two headache three COFF for sore throat five fever 6 a general feeling of being unwell human coronaviruses can sometimes cause lower respiratory tract illnesses such as pneumonia or bronchitis. this is more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease people with weakened immune systems.

The new virus is called 2019-nCoV. It's unclear how easily it spreads from person to person, but the CDC recommends that anyone who may have been exposed to the illness monitor themselves for 14 days after close contact with an infected person.

In rare cases are potentially lethal symptoms of the new coronaviruses include fever cough and difficulty in breathing the first cases of the pneumonia like virus were reported in Wuhan China on December 31st 2019.

Since then the virus has spread to various other countries including violent Japan the Republic of Korea in the United States as of January 24.

There were more than 830 confirmed cases and 26 deaths linked to caronia virus according to the Washington Post.

upon the detection of the virus in Wuhan China in people who had visited the local seafood and animal market a research was carried out which shows suggest that coronavirus likely originated in snakes. However some experts have criticized the study saying it's unclear if coronaviruses can indeed infect snakes.

Report shows that human coronaviruses are most commonly spread between an infected person and others via the air through a close personal contact touching an object's surface with viral particles and AIDS and then such in your mouth and also from fecal contamination which is rare.

Sadly there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus but researchers in the US National Institutes of Health confirmed the way in preliminary stages of developing one its prevents a coronavirus infection some steps to avoiding common cold can and should be taken such as washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or with an aqua bathed hand sanitizer keeping your hands and fingers away from your eye nose and mouth and also avoiding close contact with people who are infected.

Coronavirus infection can also be treated the same way a cold is treated such as gas and plenty of rest drinking lots of fluids taken recommended drugs for sore throats and fever. Also a humidifier and steamy char can help ease sore and scratchy throats among others if symptoms persist contact a doctor. It is expected that strict adherence to these measures and more will at least keep coronavirus at bay.

A new coronavirus that are spread to almost 2,000 people is infectious and his incubation period before symptoms show making it harder to contain chinese officials say some 56 people have died from the virus.

Health Minister Monsieur Way told reporters the ability of the virus to spread appeared to be strengthening. Several Chinese cities have imposed significant travel restrictions. Woman in Hebei the source of the outbreak is an effective lockdown the infections.

We're at a critical stage of containment the Health Minister said officials announced that the sale of all wildlife in China would be banned from Sunday.

The virus is thought to have originated from animals but no cause has been officially identified in humans. The virus is thought to have originated from animals but no cause has been officially identified in humans.

The incubation period of the coronavirus remains unknown. Some sources say it could be between 10 to 14 days.

Facts on Coronavirus

  • There isn't a cure for the common cold.
  • There are total six known human coronaviruses.
  • SARS and MERS are both caused by coronavirus.
  • In 37 countries SARS spread from China to cause infection, killing 774 people.
  • Coronaviruses can infect several species

Coronavirus Symptoms

Symptoms of the hCov-EMC aka Coronavirus infection include flu like fever, cough and difficulty breathing, which quickly evolves to severe pneumonia and renal (kidney) failure. These symptoms are almost like those caused by SARS, consistent with a recent study published within the journal The Lancet.

Despite sharing some symptoms that were almost like SARS, there are some important differences, like the absence of upper respiratory tract symptoms like nasal discharge, sneezing and sore throat and intestinal symptoms like diarrhea, which affected 20% to 25% of SARS.

Patients with confirmed New Coronavirus infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

CDC believes at this point that symptoms of New Coronavirus may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

There are some reports of non-respiratory symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Many people recover within a few days. However, some people especially the very young, elderly, or people that have a weakened immune system may develop a more serious infections, like bronchitis or pneumonia.

How does coronavirus spread?

The coronavirus is spreading so rapidly due partially to an interesting quirk of the virus: A two week incubation period.

During this time, the infected person will not show any symptoms and will feel fine. However, they can infect people for at least part of this incubation period.

The virus is also spreading quickly through China due to the Lunar New Year, which is the largest human migration in history.

The virus is airborne and can survive on surfaces for up to 48 hours in colder climates. It is also spread through close person to person contact, infecting urban centers at a higher rate because of this.

The R0 is the rate of infection of the virus, and is sitting at 3.6. This means that for every person infected with the virus, they will go on to infect 3.6 other people. This is more virulent than the flu. Because of the high R0 of the virus, the growth is exponential, and for the past few days, the number of confirmed cases has doubled daily.
